What is the largest possible area of a square cut out of a circle with radius 1 cm?
-----------
Draw a circle
Draw a square inside the circle.
The diagonal of the square is the diameter of the circle = 2 cm
---
Let the sides of the square be "x".
Use Pythagoras to find "x":
Equation:
x^2 + x^2 = 2^2
2x^2 = 4
x^2 = 2
x = sqrt(2)
-----------
Area of the square = (sqrt(2))^2 = 2 sq cm
