Write an equation for each statement:
:
The length of a rectangle is 3 times the width.
L = 3W
:
If the length is decreased by 4 m and the width is increased by 1 m the perimeter will be 66 m.
:
2(L-4) + 2(W+1) = 66
2L - 8 + 2W + 2 = 66
2L + 2W - 6 = 66
2L + 2W = 66 + 6
2L + 2W = 72
Simplify, divide by 2
L + W = 36
:
What are the dimensions of the original rectangle?
Replace L with 3W
3W + W = 36
4W = 36
W =
W = 9 m, original width
then
3(9) = 27 m original length
