If top layer and bottom layer were all black we would maximize black surface
16 black on top and 16 on bottom=32 cubes
now how many surfaces squares are black
32
plus 8 on each of 4 sides times 4=32 more
64 are black
White are 32 =8 on each of 4 sides but not top and bottom
