Question 249624: The side of a square equals the length of a rectangle. The width of the rectangle is 4 meters longer than its length. The sum of the ares of the square and the rectangle is 240 square centimeters. Find the side of the square.

SQUARE AREA=X^2
RECTANGLE AREA=LW
L=X
W=L+4
L^2+L(L+4)=240
L^2+L^2+4L-240=0
2L^2+4L-240=0
2(L^2+2L-120)=0
2(L+12)(L-10)=0
L-10=0
L=10 LENGTH OF THE SIDES OF THE SQUARE.
AREA OF THE SQUARE=10^1=100
W=10+4=14 IS THE WIDTH OF THE RECTANGLE.
AREA OF THE RECTANGLE=10*14=140
PROOF:
10^2+10*14=240
100+140=240
240=240
