70=2w+2(w+5)
70=2w+2w+10
60=4w
15=w

l=w+5=20

The length of a rectangle is 5ft more than its width. If the perimeter is 70ft, find the dimension.

Step 1. Let w be the width and w+5 be the length.

Step 2. Perimeter P means that we add up all the lengths of the four sides.

Step 3. Then we have





Subtract 10 from both sides of the equation



Divide 4 to both sides of the equation





With w=15, then w+5=20. Check perimeter...P=15+15+20+20=70 which is a true statement.

Step 4. ANSWER. The width is 15 ft and the length is 20 ft.
