Question 199233: Two angles are complementary. The sum of the measure of the first angle and the one-fourth the second angel is 75º. Find the measures of the angles.
I know that two angles have to equal 90º. So do I take 1/4 of 75º = 18.75. 90-18.75 = 71.25. Would the angles be 75º, 18.75º & 71.25º?

Let x be the first angle, then (90-x) is the measure of the second angle, because the sum of these two complementary angles is 90 degrees.

The problem states that the sum of the first angle (x) and one fourth of the second angle () is 75 degrees, so you can write the equation to find x.
Multiply through by 4 to clear the fraction.
Simplfy the left side.
Subtract 90 from both sides.
Finally, divide both sides by 3.
degrees, and...
degrees.
Check:
Substitute x = 70.
