Question 194818: A rectangle has one side that is 2ft longer than the other. The diagonal is 10ft. What is the perimeter?
This is an extra credit question from my college Algebra II professor. I have no idea how to go about solving it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer by solver91311(24713)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let x represent the width, then x + 2 represents the length, in other words the two legs of the right triangle formed by the diagonal.

So:

Discard the negative root because we are looking for a positive measure of length. Width is 6, Length is then 6 + 2 = 8. You can calculate the perimeter for yourself.
