The lenght of a rectangular picture is 5 inches greater thatn twice the width. If the perimeter is 112 inches, find the dimensions of the frame.

The length of a rectangular picture is 5 inches greater thatn twice the width. If the perimeter is 112 inches, find the dimensions of the frame.

Let the width be "x".
Then length = "2x+5"
-------------------------
Perimeter = 2(length + width)
112 = 2(2x+5 + x)
56 = 3x+5
3x = 51
x = 17 inches (width)
2x+5 = 2*17+5 = 34+5 = 39 inches (length)

"L" = the length
:
Just write an equation for what it says:
:
"The length of a rectangular picture is 5 inches greater that twice the width.
L = 2x + 5
:
" If the perimeter is 112 inches,"
twice the length + twice the width = 112
2L + 2x = 112
Simplify, divide equation by 2; the results:
L + x = 56
:
From the 1st statement, replace L with (2x+5)
(2x+5) + x = 56
subtract 5 from both sides
2x + x = 56 - 5
3x = 51
x =
x = 17 in is the width
then
L = 2(17) + 5
L = 34 + 5
L = 39 in is the length

2(39) + 2(17) =
78 + 34 = 112, confirms our solution
