YOU HAVE A RIGHT TRIANGLE WITH THE BASE=4M & THE HYPOTENUSE=5M.
4^2+X^2=5^
16+X^2=25
X^2=25-6
X^2=9
X=SQRT9
X=3M. IS THE HEIGHT OFTHE LADDER ON THE SIDE OF THE WALL.
12-3=9M IS THE DISTANCE FROM THE TOP OF THE LADDER TO THE TOP OF THE WALL.

Ok, can you see a right triangle here where the ladder is the hypotenuse (5m), the base is the distance from the wall to the bottom of the ladder (4m), and the distance from the top of the ladder to the ground is xm.
We can easily find x because we have a Pythagorean triplet of 3, 4, and 5 for the sides of the right triangle. So x = 3.
Now since the wall is 12 meters high, if we subtract 3m from 12m to get 9m, this will be the distance between the top of the ladder and the top of wall.
