Point P(1,0) partitions MN in the ratio of 5:4. The coordinates of M are
(-4,5). Find the coordinates of N.

We draw the two points and connect them:



We see that the line cuts through 5 squares diagonally
from M to P.  Now we want to extend MP to N so that
the ratio of MP:PN = 5:4. 

Since MP is 5 diagonals of squares, we will have the 5:4
ratio if we extend MP by 4 diagonals of squares.  So we
do that:



So we look to see what point it ended up on, and we can
see that it ended up at (5,-4), So the coordinaters of N
are (5,-4).

MP is 5 diagonals of squares, and PN is 4 diagonals of squares,
So MP:PN = 5:4.

P divides MN in the ratio 5:4; so PN is 4/5 of MP.

From M to P is 5 units right and 5 units down; 4/5 of that is 4 units right and 4 units down.

4 units right and 4 units down from (1,0) is at (5,-4).
