If a tree rising to 120 at the top was struck by lighting causing the upper half to splinter but remain connected to the trunk and the tip of the tree landed 40 feet from the base of the tree.
What is the remaining height of the tree?
:
let x = the remaining height of the tree
then
(120-x) = the length of the portion of the tree going to the ground
:
this forms a right triangle that we can solve

x^2 + 1600 = 14400 - 240x + x^2
Subtract x^2 from both side
1600 = 14400 - 240x
240x =14400 - 1600
240x = 12800
x =
x = 53 ft is remaining height of the tree
