Question 1123065: A truck hauling a cylindrical tank has to pass under an overhead parabolic arch bridge which has a 24 m wide base and is 20 m high. If the tank is 16 m in diameter and is placed in the truck with sides vertical and it's top 10 m above the ground, can the truck pass under the bridge (assuming that the axis of the tank is along the axis of the parabolic section)? If so, what is the smallest clearance from the top of the tank?

If the highest point on the bridge is 20 meters off the ground (the ground being the lower roadway where the truck is driving), then this means that the top of the cylinder must be lower than 20 meters off the ground.
However, the truck bed is 10 meters off the ground, and the cylinder's diameter is 16 meters. So we have a total of 10+16 = 26 meters. The top of the cylinder (26 m) is higher off the ground compared to the vertex of the bridge (20 m).
Therefore, the truck cannot pass under the bridge. The truck will need to use a cylinder with a smaller diameter.
