1 cubic foot = 1728 cubic inches.
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 46656 cubic inches.

the rectangular hole is 10 feet by 6 feet by 40 feet.
the volume of the hole is therefore 10 * 6 * 40 = 2400 cubic feet.
this is equivalent to 2400 * 1728 = 4147200 cubic inches.
divide this by 46656 and you get 88.89 cubic yards.
alternatively, divide 2400 cubic feet by 27 and you get 88.89 cubic yards.

the tank has a diameter of 42 inches and is 40 feet deep.
the depth of 40 feet is equivalent to 40 * 12 = 480 inches.
the radius of the tank is 42/2 = 21 inches.
the volume of the tank is pi * 21^2 * 480 = 665012.3329 cubic inches.
