x^2+(x+17)^2=53^2

2x^2+34x-2520=0
divide by 2
x^2+17x-1260=0
x=(1/2)(-17+/- sqrt (289+1260*4)); sqrt (5329)=73
only positive root is (1/2)(-17+73)=28 in--that is the width and its square is 784
