Question 1061945: The length of a rectangle is
3 m
less than twice the width, and the area of the rectangle is
44 m2
. Find the dimensions of the rectangle

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
L = length
W = width
L = 2W-3
area = L*W = 44
replace L with 2W-3 and you get L*W = 44 becomes (2W-3)*W = 44
simplify to get 2W^2 - 3W = 44
subtract 44 from both sides of this equation to get 2W^2 - 3W - 44 = 0
factor this quadratic equation to get W = -4 or W = 11/2.
W is positive, so W must be equal to 11/2.
L is equal to 2W - 3, so L is equal to 8.
you have L = 8 and W = 11/2.
area = L*W = 8 * 11/2 = 88/2 = 44
solution looks good.
L = 8
W = 11/2 = 5.5
