.
The perimeter of a rectangle 40cm. The length is 2cm more than 5 times the width. What are the the dimensions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
L + W = 20,   (1)
L = 5W + 2.   (2)
Substitute (2) into (1). You will get
(5W + 2) + W = 20,   or
6W = 20 - 2,   or
6W = 18,
W =  = 3 cm. It is the width.
The length is L = 5W + 2 = 5*3 + 2 = 17.
