Question 102043: A quadrilateral enclosure has sides measuring 89.7 feet, 93.75 feet, 91.279 feet, and 88.52 feet. Use the correct number of significant digits to find the perimeter of the enclosure.
I have answered this question twice and gotten it wrong twice. Please help me! Answer by doukungfoo(195) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! In dealing with significant digits you should follow this rule for addition and subtraction. RULE: When adding or subtracting your answer can only show as many decimal places as the measurement having the fewest number of decimal places.
This rule is applied to the answer only so don't attempt to round any numbers before adding them.
So lets find out the perimeter of this quadrilateral.
perimeter is equal to the sum of all sides.
89.7 + 93.75 + 91.279 + 88.52 = 363.249
Ok now apply the rule to correctly round 363.249
We can see that the fewest number of decimal places in any of our measurements is one. So we will round the answer to one decimal place so the answer is
363.2 feet
