Question 1001394: Draw and solve question
A section of a boardwalk is made using 15 boards. Each board is 9 1/4 inches wide. The total width of the section is 144inches. The spacing between each board is equal. What is the width of the spacing between each board?

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
15 * 9.25 inches = 138.75 inches.
the section is 144 inches.
the empty space is 144 - 138.75 = 5.25 inches.
divide that by 15 and you get a space of .35 inches between each board.

since this is a section of the boardwalk, you need to take into consideration that this section will be joined with other sections that need to have the same width of each board and the same spacing between each board.

this is why your section starts with a board and ends with a space.

here's a picture of your section with an adjoining section that has been designed the same way.
