let x=dollars Mrs Kelly spent

.90x-.75x=.75*.90*4
.15x=2.70
x=18
check:
18/.90=20 (number of apples bought at 90ç/lb)
18/.75=24(number of apples bought at 75ç/lb)

Let weight, in pounds, of fruit purchased be W
As purchase price was 90c per lb, cost of fruit was: 90W
If cost per pound was 15c less, then price, per lb would've been: 90 - 15, or 75c
At reduced price, she would've have been able to buy 4 more lbs, or a total of (W + 4) lbs
Price she'd then pay, at reduced price = 75(W + 4), or 75W + 300
Since she'd spend the same amount of money, we now get: Original cost of fruit = reduced cost of fruit, OR
90W = 75W + 300
90W - 75W = 300 -------- Subtracting 75W from right-side of equation
15W = 300
W, or weight of fruit she purchased = , or 20 lbs
Money she spent or cost of fruit: 20(90c), or 1,800 cents, or
