N+Q=52
N=52-Q
$0.05N+$0.25Q=$8 Substitute for N
$0.05(52-Q)+$0.25Q=$8
$2.60-$0.05Q+$0.25Q=$8 Subtract $2.60 from each side.
$0.20Q=$5.40 Divide each side by $0.20
Q=27 ANSWER 1: There were 27 quarters.
N=52-Q=52-27=25 ANSWER 2: There were 25 nickels.
CHECK:
$0.05N+$0.25Q=$8
$0.05(25)+$0.25(27)=$8
