Question 951432: In Peter's piggy bank, there are 6 times as many dimes as quarters and 2 more nickels than quarters. If Peter has $11.8 in his bank, how many quarters does he have?
Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let d = no. of dimes
let n = no. of nickels
let q = no. of quarters
:
Write an equation for each statement
;
In Peter's piggy bank, there are 6 times as many dimes as quarters
d = 6q
and 2 more nickels than quarters.
n = q + 2
If Peter has $11.8 in his bank,
.05n + .10d + .25q = 11.80
replace n with (q+2); replace d with 6q
.05(q+2) + .10(6q) + .25q = 11.80
do the math
.05q + .10 + .6q + .25q = 11.80
collect like terms
.05q + .6q + .25q = 11.80 - .10
.90q = 11.70
q = 11.70/.9
q = 13 quarters which is what they asked for

:
However to check this, find the no. of dimes and nickels
n = 13 + 2
n = 15 nickels
and
d = 6(13)
d = 78 dimes
See if this adds up
.05(15) + .10(78) + .25(13) =
.75 + 7.80 + 3.25 = 11.80

Did this make sense to you. Can you do these type of problems now? ankor@att.net
