Question 945831: I need help turning this word problem into two equations.
Alyssa invested a total of $1500 into two accounts. One account paid 2% annual intrest, and the other account paid 4% annual intrest. After one year, Alyssa earned a total of $44. How much did she invest in each account?
I also know that I have to use the simple intrest formula I=prt.
I have tried to make two equations each for every account and plug the numbers into each variable. I have choose to put 2% as the first rate and 4% as the second rate, then I put time for both as one for one year. I had also added 44 to both equations as the intrest. Then I had decided that the principle is what I was missing, but I feel I was wrong with something because when I solved the equations with the elimination process I had gotten 0.333... for the first equation and 0.0151515... for the second equation.

x + y = 1500
.02x + .04y = 44
solve first equation for x and substitute in second equation
.02(1500-y) + .04y = 44
30-.02y + .04y = 44
.02y = 14
y = 700 and x = 800
Alyssa invested $800 at 2% and $700 at 4%
