Question 943333: A garden hose can fill a swimming pool in 5 days, and a larger hose can fill the pool in 2 days. How long will it take to fill the pool if both hoses are used?
Answer by macston(5194) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Garden hose fills 1 pool/5 days=1/5 pool per day
Large hose fills 1 pool/2 days=1/2 pool per day
Find common denominator and add:
Together: (1/5 pool/day)(2/2)+(1/2 pool/day)(5/5)=2/10+5/10=7/10 pool/day=0.7 pool/day
To fill pool at rate 0.7 pool/day : 1 pool/0.7 pool/day=1.43 days
ANSWER Both hoses together take 1.43 days to fill the pool
