Question 901635: Some Serate dorm scholars agree to pay equally the cost of an algebra book and each pays Php 12.00. If there had been two more scholars, each would have paid Php 8.00 only. How many scholars were there and how much was the cost of the book?
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let cost of book be x
number of scholars be y

x/y = 12
x=12y
scholars increased by 2
x/(y+2)=8
12y/(y+2)=8
12y=8(y+2)
12y=8y+16
12y-8y=16
4y=16
y=4 number of scholars
x/y = 12
x/4 =12
x=48 cost of book
