Amy invested a total of $21,000 in stocks and bonds. If the amount invested in bonds is half that invested in stocks, how much is invested in each category?

stock investment is x and bonds invested is x/2, therefore
x + x/2 = 21000
3x/2 = 21000
3x = 42000
x = 14000
$14,000 invested in stocks
$7,000 invested in bonds
