Question 8186: I have a word problem that is a little confusing for me to put into an equation. I have the answer, which I believe to be correct but don't know how to write it. I have an answer of $258.75 but don't know how to right it in an equation for algebra. Any help here would be appreciated.
Ramon owes $780 on his VISA account. He returns three items costing $43.10, $36.80, and $125.00 and receives credit on his account. Next, he makes a payment of $400. He then makes a purchase of $82.75. How much does Ramon still owe?

You can start by considering the amount Ramon owes as a negative balance and any credits he receives or payments he makes as positive amounts to his balance..
Starting with his initial balance of -$780.00, and adding all of the credits/payments and subtracting the purchases, we get:
-$780.00 + $43.10 + 36.80 + $125.00 + $400.00 - $82.75 Simplifying, we get:
-$862.75 + $604.90 = -$257.85
So Ramon still owes: $ 257.85
This is different from your answer, so you might want to double-check your addition.
