Question 794678: I am having trouble coming up with the formula to solve this word problem. I know that I can solve it once I have it - and thats where I am running into trouble. This is the word problem:
Students at Hammond Middle school are raising money for the end-of-the-year school party. They decide to sell roses for Valentines Day. The students can buy the roses for 50 cents each from a wholesaler. They also need $60 to buy ribbon and paper to protect the roses as well as materials for advertising the sale. They sell each rose for $1.30
a.) How many roses must they sell to break even?
B. How much profit is there if they sell 50 roses? 100 roses? 200 roses?

The revenue for selling x roses is .

"Break even" means the revenue and the cost are equal. You would want to then solve for the number of roses, x. I am assuming something here, which is not exactly what the original question should have intended, that the students are buying as many roses as they sell.
