Question 777413: I always have trouble translating these word problems into algebraic form. I don't want the answer, but the structure of how to make the word problem algebraic would be much appreciated.
Problem: For the two weeks period, Jan earned $150 less than twice Tom's earnings. Together Jan and Tom earned $1380. How much did Tom earn?

Answer by Cromlix(4381)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Make Tom's earnings = x
Jan's earnings are = 2x - 150
Together Tom and Jan earned $1380
x + (2x - 150) = 1380
Add
3x - 150 = 1380
3x = 1380 + 150
3x = 1530
x = 510
Tom earned $510.
Hope this helps.
