Question 765872: Adult tickets for a play cost $16 and child tickets cost $6. If there were 25 people at a performance and the theater collected $260 from ticket sales, how many adults and how many children attended the play?
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x= Number of adults
y= Number of children

1 x + 1 y = 25 .............1
Total value
16 x + 6 y = 260 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by -6
Multiply (2) by 1
-6 x -6 y = -150
16 x + 6 y = 260
Add the two equations
10 x = 110
/ 10
x = 11
plug value of x in (1)
1 x + 1 y = 25
11 + y = 25
y = 25 -11
y = 14
y = 14
x= 11 Number of adults
y= 14 Number of children
