Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = original salary

x + 5% of x = New Salary

x + 0.05x = 42000

1.05x = 42000

x = 42000/1.05

x = 40000

So she was making $40,000 before the salary increase.
