Question 660336: I knnow that i have done this type of problem before, but i cant seem to remember how do it. A salesperson's weekly paycheck is 15% less than a second salespersons paycheck. The two paychecks total $1125. Find the amount of each paycheck.
Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = person 1
y = person 2
Convert 15% to a decimal
15/100 = .15
x = y - .15y
x + y = 1125
Substitute the first equation in the second
y - .15y + y = 1125
Combine like terms
2y - .15y = 1125
1.85y = 1125
1.85y/1.85 = 1125/1.85
y = $608.11 for person 2
Using y to solve for x
x = 608.11 - (.15)(608.11)
x = 608.11 - 91.22
x = $516.89 for person 1
