Translate each statement to simple equation:
:
"Pam has some nickels, dimes, and quarters worth $6.75."
.05n + .10d + .25q = 6.75
:
"There are four times as many nickels as dimes,"
n = 4d
:
"and five more quarters than dimes."
q = d + 5
:
How many of each kind of coin does she have?
:
Take the 1st equation: Substitute: 4d for n, and (d+5) for q:
.05(4d) + .10d + .25(d+5) = 6.75
.2d + .1d + .25d + 1.25 = 6.75
.55d = 6.75 - 1.25
.55d = 5.50
d = 5.50/.55
d = 10 dimes
:
I'll let you find the number of nickels and quarters using the applicable equation. Check all 3 solutions in the 1st equation.
