Question 545770: how to write the equation for the problem " no name oatmeal costs 2/3 the price of the leading name brand. if the no name brand is $1.50, how much does the name brand cost"
Answer by neatmath(302) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the no name oatmeal be N.
Let the leading brand oatmeal be L.
Then we know from the given facts that
We also know the value for N, it is 1.50
So we can substitute this in our equation:
And now we just need to solve for L to find out how much the leading brand costs!
given
multiplied both sides by 3
divided both sides by 2
So our leading brand oatmeal costs $2.25, which makes sense from our given facts.
Notice how we could have also just multiplied the no name brand price by 3/2 to get the leading brand price?
That would be a little shortcut using the properties of inverse operations!
I hope this helps! :)
