Nadine's nickels: n
Delano's dimes: d
Money that Nadine has: 5n
Money that Delano has: 10d

n = d + 7
n - d = 7

5n + 40 = 10(d-4)
5n + 40 = 10d - 40
5n - 10d = -80

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE linear system by SUBSTITUTION
Solve:
We'll use substitution. After moving -1*d to the right, we get:
, or . Substitute that
into another equation:
and simplify: So, we know that d=23. Since , n=30.

Nadine has seven more nickels( N SAY ) than Delano has dimes ( D SAY ).
N=D+7
If Delano gives Nadine four of his dimes,
DELANO HAS = D-4 DIMES = 10(D-4)=10D-40 CENTS
NADINA WILL HAVE ...N NICKELS + 4 DIMES =5N+40 CENTS
then Delano will have the same amount of money as Nadine.
10D-40 = 5N + 40 = 5(D+7)+40
10D-5D=35+40+40=115
5D=115
D=115/5=23.............
D=23
N=23+7=30
N=30
TOGETHER THEY HAVE 30*5+23*10=150+230=380 CENTS..=$3.80
How much money do they have together? (Assume that Nadine has only nickels and Delano has only dimes.)
N=D

Nadine has seven more nickels than Delano has dimes. If Delano gives Nadine four of his dimes, then Delano will have the same amount of money as Nadine. How much money do they have together? (Assume that Nadine has only nickels and Delano has only dimes.)
-----------------
Let Delano have "x" dimes ; their value is 10x cents.
Nadine has "x+7" nickels ; their value is 5x+35 cents.
---------
Now Delano gives Nadine four dimes; their value is 40cents
----------
EQUATION:
Nadine value = Delano value
5x+35+40 cents = 10x-40 cents
5x+75 = 10x-40
5x=115
x=35
So, Nadine has 5(35)+75=$2.50
and Delano has 10(35)-40=$3.10
Together they have $5.60
Cheers,
Stan H.
