Question 498268: two cars begin to drive in the same direction at the same time, one traveling at 60 miles per hour and one at 48 miles per hour. After 2 hours, how far apart are the cars?

Going the same directions, their speeds are subtracted.
They separate at 12 mi/hr (60 - 48).
More formally, the speed of one car wrt (with respect to) the other is 12 mi/hr.
2*12 = 24 miles apart.
