Question 469988: I tried doing this in a few different ways but none of them seemed to work. In other words how am I supposed to solve this?
"Bill sold his skates for 85¢ less than he paid for them. If he sold his skates for $4.65, how much did he pay for them?"
Answer by sofiyac(983) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
lets say he paid x for them
then
x-0.85=4.65 solve for x, so add 0.85 to each side
x=5.5
so he paid $5.50 for them
