Question 443255: There are two whole numbers. When the larger number is divided by the smaller number, the quotient is 9 and the remainder is 15. Also, the larger number is 97.5% of ten times the smaller. If x is the larger number and y is the smaller number, express the given information in equations in terms of x and y.
Answer by swincher4391(1107)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the larger; y the smaller.
Let's divide two random numbers:
11 | 57
11 goes into 57 5 times.
So the quotient is 5, with a remainder of 2.
We can express this as 5 + 2/11.
To check that we can express it in this way:
(5+2/11) * 11 = 55 +2 = 57.
Using this fact we can take x/y as
x/y = Q + R
We know Q = 9
and R = 15/y.
