If Jose has 22 coins, then
X+Y=22
If all the coins are either nickles or quarters, then
.25X+.05Y=4.10
Multiply the second equation by 100, we get
25X+5Y=410
Take the first equation and multiply by 5 we get
5X+5Y=110
Subtract the first equation from the second, we get
20X=300
X=15
So we have 15 quarters (X) and 22-15, or 7 nickels (Y).
