Jim has $5 in coins. He has twice as many nickels as he does quarters. He also has four less dimes than quarters. How many of each coin does he have?

Let n = no. of nickels
let d = no. of dimes
let q - no. of quarter
:
Write an equation for each statement
:
"Jim has $5 in coins."
.05n + .10d + .25q = 5.00
:
"He has twice as many nickels as he does quarters."
n = 2q
:
"He also has four less dimes than quarters."
d = q-4
:
Using the 1st equation, replace n with 2q; replace d with (g-4)
.05(2q) + .10(q-4) + .25q = 5.00
.10q + .10q - .4 + .25q = 5.00
Combine like terms, add .5 to both sides
.45q = 5 + .4
q =
q = 12 quarters
