The populatoin of the U.S in 199 was estimated to be 273.1 million people. This was an increase of 34 percent from the population in 1969. What was the population in the U.S in 1969?

Let x = population in 1969.
The population increased by 34% of the original population, so that could be represented by 0.34x
The 273.1 million is the 1969 population plus the 34%, so x+0.34x=273.1 million.
To solve: add the x's together to get 1.34x=273.1 million.
Then divide both sides by 1.34, so x=203.8 million.
