A grocery store sells certain candies in bulk.
The Good and Plenty cost $2.49 per pound and Sweet Treats cost $2.89 per pound. If Jane Strange takes 3 scoops of Good and Plenty and mixes it with 5 scoops of Sweet Treats, how much per pound should the mixture sell for?
Assume each scoop contained the same weight of candy.
------------------------------
Assume each scoop weighs one pound.
Equation:
value + value = value
2.49*3 + 2.89*5 = p(8)
p = $2.74 (price per scoop of the mixture)

You can think of this as just like any mixture. You're looking for the proportion of each kind of candy. In this case the proportion is 3 to 5. Since 3+5 = 8, the proportion of Good & Plenty is 3/8 and the proportion of Sweet Treats is 5/8. The cost per pound for this proportion is simply:
.

.
So you would charge the buyer 2.74/lb for this mixture that is 3 parts Good & Plenty and 5 parts Sweet Treats.

3*2.49 + 5*2.89=21.92
21.92/8=$2.74/lb
