Ok, so you have 2 bucks in nickels and dimes. You have twice as many dimes as you do nickels.
Since we don't know how many of each coin we have we'll assign variables.
Let X= the number of nickels (.05)
And since we have twice as many dimes as nickels,
Let 2X= the number of dimes (.10)
Now when we add them together we get the total. Since we're looking for the monetary value of the coins, we must multiply our assigned variables by the monetary value of the coin first. This gives us the equation:
.05X for nickels, and .20X for dimes, this gives us our equation of:
.05X + .20X = 2.00
Add them together and we get:
.25X = 2.00
Now we devide by .25 to give us:
X = 8
So X is the number of nickels, so we have 8 nickels.
Since we have twice the number of dimes as we do nickels, multiply 8 by 2 to give us 16 dimes.
You can check this with the following equation:
(.05)* 8 + (.10) * 16 = 2.00
.40 + 1.60 = 2.00
2.00 = 2.00
So we have 8 nickels and 16 dimes to give us $2
Hope this helps!
