I'm still saving for tuition and tucked away a bigger can full of nickles and quarters in the kitchen cupboard. When I cashed in the coins, the coin counter said I had a total of $240 from a total of 1400 coins. How many of each did I have in the can?
I know the formulas are-
x + y =1400
x(.25) + y(.05) =240
How do I get the formulas to work together?

x + y =1400
x(.25) + y(.05) =240
You have a couple of choices.
x=1400-y now replace x with (1400-y) in the second equation & solve for y.
(1400-y).25+.05y=240
350-.25y+.05y=240
-.20y=240-350
-.20y=-110
y=-110/-.20
y=550 nickles.
x+550=1400
x=1400-550
x=850 quarters.
Proof:
.25*850+.05*550=240
212.5+27.5=240
240=240
