Books cost 40 cents and pamphlets 5 cents at the book sale. If Donnie spends $4.15 at the book sale and purchased 20 more pamphlets than he did books, how many pamphlets did he buy?

___ p(.05) + b(.40) = 4.15

"purchased 20 more pamphlets than he did books" ___ b = p - 20

substituting and multiplying by 100 to clear decimals ___ 5p + 40(p - 20) = 415

5p + 40p - 800 = 415 ___ 45p = 1215 ___ p = 27

.05(x+20)+.40x=4.15
.05x+1+.40x=4.15
.45x=4.15-1
.45x=3.15
x=3.15/.45
x=7 number of books bought.
7+20=27 pamphlets bought.
Proof:
.05*27+.40*7=4.15
1.35+2.80=4.15
4.15=4.15

Let represent the number of pamphlets purchased. Then must represent the number of books purchased.

Each pamphlet costs 5 cents, so the total amount paid for pamphlets must be cents. Each book costs 40 cents, so the total amount paid for books must be . And the sum of these two amounts is $4.15, which we can represent at 415 cents so that the units of measure are consistent. (alternatively, you could say that the total cost of pamphlets was and the total cost of books and then the sum would be 4.15, but I just like to work with integer coefficients)

Solve for and you have your answer.
