: Recovering an investment. The manager at Cream of
the Crop bought a load of watermelons for $200. She
priced the melons so that she would make $1.50 profit on
each melon. When all but 30 had been sold, the manager
had recovered her initial investment. How many did she
buy originally?
First, I had x= the total # of watermelons
Then, I did x=1.5(x)-30
x=1.5(x)-30
-.5x=-30
x=60
However when I check the answer, it doesn't check correctly. I think that I do not have the correct equation. I just need a little help in the right direction.

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the selling price is (200/x)+1.50

so (x-30)[(200/x)+1.5)=200

--SOLUTION BELOW--

multiplying by 2x ___ (x-30)(400+3x)=400x

FOILing ___ 3x^2+310x-12000=400x

subtracting 400x and dividing by 3 ___ x^2-30x-4000=0

factoring ___ (x-80)(x+50)=0

so x=80
