x = number of mugs made
Each mug needs 1.04 pounds of clay, so 1.04x is the amount of clay used for all the mugs only.

1.04x+13.8 pounds of clay is used for the sculpture and mugs

Add on the leftover amount 17.68 to end up with 1.04x+13.8+17.68 = 1.04x+31.48
This is the total amount of clay.

We'll set that equal to the 45 pounds she bought.
Solve for x.
1.04x+31.48 = 45
1.04x = 45-31.48
1.04x = 13.52
x = 13.52/(1.04)
x = 13

Answer: 13 mugs were made
