Question 1169072: Latron believes if he cuts back on his part-time job, he can spend some additional time
working out over the next 20 weeks and earn an athletic scholarship to the local college.
However, cutting back at work means he will forgo making $12 an hour at his uncle’s
shop. Assuming he now works only 10 hours a week with his reduced schedule instead of
the normal 22 hours a week, how much will his scholarship have to pay for him to break
even?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if he continues to work 22 hours a week over the next 20 weeks, he will earn:
20 weeks * 22 hours a week * 12 dollars an hour = 5280 dollars.
if he cuts back and only works 10 hours a week, he will earn:
20 weeks * 10 hours a week * 12 dollars an hour = 2400 dollars.
he loses 5280 - 2400 = 2880 dollars by working out instead of working.
the scholarship would have to be equal to 2880 to pay him back for the hours that he didn't get paid.
that's the break even point.
anything more than that, his workouts made him money.
anything less than that, his workouts cost him money.
