Andres is handing out licorice pieces and butterscotch hard candies for Halloween.
He wants to have a total of 10 pounds of candy, but he doesn't want to spend more than $17.00 total on the candy.
If licorice pieces costs $3.10 per pound, and butterscotch hard candies costs $1.10 per pound, how many pounds of each type of candy should he buy?
:
L = lbs of Licorice
s = lbs of butterscotch
:
L + s = 10
s = (10-L)
:
3.1L + 1.1s = 17
replace s with (10-L)
3.1L + 1.1(10-L) = 17
3.1L + 11 - 1.1L = 17
3.1L - 1.1L = 17 - 11
2L = 6
L = 6/2
L = 3 lb of Licorice
and
10 - 3 = 7 lb of b.s candy
:
:
see if that checks out
3.1(3) + 1.1(7) =
9.3 + 7.7 = 17
