$5900 is invested, part of it at 12% and part of it at 6%.
For a certain year, the total yield is $540.00.
How much was invested at each rate?
;
let a = amt invested at 12%
the total investment is 5900, therefore
(5900-a) = amt invested at 6%
:
.12a + .06(5900-a) = 540
.12a + 354 - .06a = 540
.12a - .06a = 540 - 354
.06a = 186
a = 186/.06
a = $3100 invested at 12%
then
5900 - 3100 = $2800 invested at 6%
:
:
check this, find the actual return on each investment
.12*3100 = $372
.06*2800 = $168
-----------------
total int: $540
