.
interest - loss = total interest

0.09*x   - 0.05*(23000-x) = 1230     dollars

0.09x - 1150 + 0.05x      = 1230

0.14x = 1230 + 1150 = 2380  ====>  x =  = 17000.

Answer. $17000 was invested at 9%. The rest 23000-17000 = 6000 dollars was invested in stock that suffered the 5% loss.
